~~~ Heartworms & Prevention ~~~
Heartworms, if left untreated, result in death. It is imperative that you keep your dog on heartworm prevention, and, in addition, have an annual HW test to ensure that your dog remains HW free. Keep in mind that giving HW positive dog the prevention medication can cause severe reactions and even result in death in some cases.
Please, under no circumstances opt to have your pet receive the 6 month injection, ProHeart6. There have been many issues with this method of HW prevention. It was derived from an equine wormer and certain breeds of dogs suffer reactions. If a dog begins to display reactions to this injection, there is no treatment. The dog WILL die. It may be rare, but it does happen. DO NOT TAKE THIS CHANCE WITH YOUR BELOVED PET. It simply will not be worth the convenience of not dealing with the monthly pills.
Another option is Revolution, which is a topical method which also is a wormer and controls fleas. Some dogs have not done well with this product either.
There is NOTHING like an American Eskimo Dog!
