~~~ Grooming Essentials ~~~
Here is everything you ever wanted to know about grooming your American Eskimo Dog and getting that "show dog" look!The right tools are essential, and here is what I suggest ...
- Hard Slicker Brush
- Deshedding Comb
- Grooming Rake
- Aluminum Finishing Comb
- Blunt Nose Trimming Scissors
- Small Spray Bottle
- Vinegar
- Babywipes
Begin by misting your dog down with the water bottle. I use filtered water and add a splash of vinegar. This will prevent static electricity and keep the loose fur from floating about. Another option is to add a good squirt of your fave doggie conditioner, just enough to make the mixture milky.
User the hard slicker brush, brush through the entire coat. Follow up with the deshedding comb This process will take the longest, and it is best to work one section of the coat at a time. Do NOT pull the comb through the coat or try to to do much at one time. This will be painful to the dog and will not be very effective.
Use the scissors to trim any excess fur from the paw pads. While the dog is standing, trim the edges and tops of the paws. You may wish to use thinning scissors on the tops of the paws. What you are going for here is a neatly trimmed look.
If necessary, give the dog a sanitary trim on the backside. This does not require any massive shaving of the fur. Just a quick trim in that area will do. If you are using electric clippers, "clear a path" so to speak down to the bottom of the fur. Male dogs will need a trim on the belly area cleanliness. Baby wipes are a great way to freshen up your dog in this area.
For the final finishing touch, run the aluminum comb throught the entire coat. You will be amazed at the results!
Viola!! Your dog will have that "just came from the groomers" look. Well, at least for a few days or so.
There is NOTHING like an American Eskimo Dog!
